Sadeh Celebrations

Today, the day of Sadeh Celebration, should be the third most important celebration in the Iranian calendar after Nowrooz and Mehregan. In the Book of Kings, according to Iranian mythology, it is the day man discovered how to create fire at will and control it for the benefit of mankind.

Traditional celebration of Sadeh involves lighting a big fire outdoors. The ceremony is followed by singing and dancing around the fire by the people gathered for the festivity. Everyone is expected to participate in the festival by bringing wood for the fire.

By contributing to feed the flames of fire collectively together, we symbolically provide light and illumination to our mind, and hence the Zoroastrian tenets of Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds. By contributing to feed the flames of fire collectively, we remember the visible symbol of the Invisible Divine Light to fight evil.

But there will be no large fires in the birth place of Zarathustra today. There will be no singing and dancing around the fire. Today coincides with the Shiite ceremony of Ashura on the lunar Arab calendar. A day in which a battle between Arabs in Karbala is commemorated. A day in which heads were decapitated and raised aloft on spears as trophies, and little babies killed by arrows through their throats. A day in which water was denied to thirsty children, stranded in the desert.

Instead of singing and dancing in the land of Cyrus, men will beat their bare chests, and whip their backs with chains, men and children will draw blood by striking their heads with large daggers and Shiite priests will perform sermons in mosques with the sole intention of making the faithful weep.

Today in the land of Zarathustra, martyrdom, blood, death, lamentation and self flagellation have displaced the singing, dancing and the zest for life and pursuit of happiness.

really enjoyed it. I think in Iran's case, it's the cultural geneocide that hurts the most.

The replacement of Sadeh by Ashura reminds one of a passage from the Gathas, Yasna 46:

"Blinded by pride, made deaf by teaching false, princes and priests would like to yoke mankind to evil deeds and thus destroy true life. But when they come to where stands the Judgement Bridge, their Inner Selves shall chide them as they fall into the Abode of Untruth wherein they shall dwell."

We're witnessing the gradual erosion of Iranian identity...Ashura more than being a celebration of death and violence is glorification of victimhood which we'll keep those who internalize this concept forever subjugated, powerless, wishing their death, defeated, fatalistic, and learning helplessness and thus at the mercy of Islamic clergies and Ayatollahs to impose their dogma on the poor masses and dictate their destiny.

Potkin,

Even desolate and seeming-large the expression of Ashura in the place of Sadeh is, a fire is lit with your sharing. Another is lit with my reading and its subsequent "ahah." Yet more fires come into being with every post, every comment. I seek a world view and you provide a piece of that. If the survival of humanity has at its core the need to take consideration for its evolving models of complexity (we, all of us, with the unique blend of differentiation and integration) and to make choice for its own sake (read again: for the sake of all others) - then for me as an outsider,a non-Iranian, as someone who has never heard of Sadeh and Ashura before but know their principles well, the choice is simple. The fires grow ever brighter and will continue to do so. Be well.

Radical Islam has no place for cultural or national identity IMHO. Submission, it’s all about submission, you will be assimilated, resistance is futile.

As always the BBC and its apologists look at things differently:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/4697270.stm

"Ashura is an electrifying event, spectacular in every sense of the word, with a long historical tradition of poetry and prose in various languages"

"Although many Muslims condemn the practice of self-flagellation, those who engage in it will tell you that the whole point is in fact about opposing violence"

Only the BBC apologists can say the practice striking your head with a dagger and letting blood pour out is about opposing violence :)))))
