I doubt most Iraqis would take this guy seriously.
I know Iraqis and I also know for a fact that they love their soccer/football.
Moqtada makes an appeal to the poor class of Iraq's society, who have given him their loyalty in exchange for security and protection through him.
Muqtada Sadr gives them protection? Are you nuts? He has given them nothing but misery, insecurity and sectarianism. It takes intellectuals like you to justify someone like Muqtada Sadr!

In certain Shi'ite areas, Moqtada's militia men have provided protection against the other Sunni insurgents. This is a fact. I did not believe this until I heard it from actual Iraqis.
I'm not talking about protection in the sense of 'secular freedoms' or something like that. I'm talking about safeguarding the area against Sunni extremists who want to ethnically cleanse it of all Shi'ites.
When there is such a security vacuum, (as the one that currently exists) people turn to militias for support, just to receive basic protection. This protection - again - is not synonymous with women's rights, religious tolerance, etc. I'm not talking about any of that. These are two fundamentally different issues.
This protection sends a deceiving appeal to a desperate populace that has lost all faith in their gov. When people begin to live in tents, and lose their homes to insurgents, sectarian militias deliver an appeal to the emotionally weak sects. Its human nature, I'm not justifying it. I'm just making an observation here. To 'observe' and 'justify' are two infinitely different things.
I do not support this Islamic rat. Far from it.
Please consider this next time you insinuate false labels against me like 'justifying Moqtada al Sadr.' I didnt expect this coming from you.

Well you can say this about the militias on the other side as well. The point about my post was the naive people in the West who seem to think these insurgents are some kind of liberation force they should support.

Yes, we can say the same thing about all militias. And that was exactly my point. Maybe it sounded too selective, and if it did that wasnt my intention.
Militias have received popularity as a result of the political incompetence.
In no way, shape, or form do I call these groups 'resistance fighters.' They are opportunists who benefit from the people's suffering by exploiting their vulnerability. It is self-evident of how weak the security is.
I just wish the secular/moderate forces were more vocal and organized. It seems they have never been organized, unfortunately. And I do agree with you on the west's intellectual bankruptcy in calling these militias 'resistance fighters' - at least Moqtada's and co.
