London Protests Against the Executions in Iran

Thanks to all those who braved the cold last night and condemned the recent executions in Iran, but we need more non-Iranians. At least five more face execution soon.

It was a good night, I saw a few non-Iranians there, which doesn't often happen at these protests...but more are needed.

Why is it everyone goes gaga over Palestine but the plight of Iranians remains ignored? Sigh.

Perhaps what the resistance movement in Iran needs is a general strike, particularly in the oil industry. If such a general strike occurred, the regime's oil money would evaporate. Such a mobilization of the working class might ever win over the Socialist Workers Party! More importantly the strike of the oil workers was one of the reasons why the Shah lost his throne. So if the mullahs are worse than the Shah, as you say, why use this time-tested tactic? Or at least convince other dissidents within the country to become advocates of such a strategy?

....I was stuck on a train on my way to London....

I think that the plight of the Iranians is given so little air time in the UK - apart from Channel 4 which from time to time gives more of a picture as to what is going on.

People in the UK are really ignorant as to what is going on in Iran - how the people live - how rich their culture is - how peaceful they are - if they can tell you anything it will more than likely be about the nuclear stuff that's going on - nothing more.

I've really tried, at the university I work at, to get support for the students - but it's very limited, which drives me insane.

I would love it if more non-Iranians would join in the protests - as one woman...and on my own....I feel a little...conspicuous....I shall try a rally a group for the next protest....so PLEASE keep us informed

Peace

btw I saw an amazing play at the Young Vic about Palestine on Saturday.....oops.....sorry........it's close to my heart too

Azarmehr, what do you think about my suggestion of a general struggle as a weapon of resistance for the people of Iran?

Hidden Author,

General strike you mean? From what I am told, organising labour strikes is difficult in Iran. The vast majority of workers are contract workers and not permanent employees and there are no independent trade unions, nor is there any strike funds to support the strikers. Its not like the Shah's time when people went on strike and still got paid :))

What the leaders of the Green movement like Sazegara are suggesting is for people to take part in 'white' strikes or 'Italian' strikes and effectively this is happening now, people are going to work but not doing much work.
